GPPAC Eastern and Central Africa Regional Steering Group (RSG) Meeting

Nairobi Peace Initiative Africa, The GPPAC Regional Representative for Eastern and Central Africa, convened and coordinated The 2015 Regional steering group (RSG) meeting in partnership with GPPAC Global Secretariat. The meeting took place on the 12th – 13th, October, 2015 at the Desmond Tutu Ecumenincal Centre, All Africa Council of Churches (AACC), in Nairobi, Kenya.  The main theme for this meeting was ‘Looking back, Looking forward: Engineering regional Collaboration for the Effective National and Cross-State Conflict Prevention strategies in the Eastern and Central Africa regions’.

The countries in attendance during this meeting were Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan, Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Cameroon, Congo Brazaville, DRC -Bukavu, DRC-Kinshasa and Gabon. Each country was represented by its GPPAC National Focal point, organizations working with the global secretariat at the state level.

Each country present gave highlights of the state of their nations and as a result of this came to an understanding of the fact that some of the issues plaguing the regions, as cross-cutting issues, are religious extremism, political transitions, especially in the Great Lakes region and The Horn of Africa, as well as the Proliferation of small arms and light weapons. In light of this, GPPAC eastern and Central Africa secretariat and the GPPAC national representatives are looking to design projects to address these issues not forgetting that states within the Great Lakes region and The Horn of Africa will be holding their national elections in the course of the next 2-3 years.
