ESTABLISHMENT OF THE ZAMBIA CIVIL SOCIETY FORUM UNDER THE ICGLR

Nairobi Peace Initiative Africa attended and oversaw a meeting convened by The African centre for Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) and the Regional Civil Society Forum (RSCF) under the International conference on The Great Lakes region (ICGLR) in Lusaka, Zambia. The main participants in this meeting were representatives from the Zambian Civil Society as well as the National Coordinator, ICGLR, Zambia.

The main purpose of this meeting was to help familiarize the civil society representatives with the different institutions within The ICGLR and enable them, with the consent of the RCSF Chairman and the National coordinator, Zambia, to form a National Civil Society Forum under the Umbrella of the ICGLR. They were also enlightened on the structure of the institution of the National Forum and what the positions meant for the overall achievement of regional objectives under the International Conference on the Great Lakes region.

The Civil society representatives then went ahead and elected their National Civil Society Forum members. This Included a Chairperson, Secretary and 10 members to oversee the five thematic areas of concern. These include democracy and good governance, Economic development and Regional Integration, Human rights and social issues, Peace and security and Cross-cutting issues. Therefore, in total there were elected 12 members that would constitute the National Civil Society Forum.

The meeting was successful and was characterised by the formation of Zambia’s National Civil Society Forum under the International Conference on the Great lakes region (ICGLR). The National civil Society Forum in Zambia will take up the responsibility for lobbying and advocating for different national and regional concerns and issues to the Heads of States at the upcoming Heads of State and Government of the Great Lakes Region Summit. The Forum plays a crucial role as it acts as a bridge between the Civil Society and the Heads of states of different countries within various regional blocks.
